TW: Mental health discussion
Previous Name: The Little Mermaid (not the Ariel oneāthe original)
Myth: Fairy tales
Past Life Information: The Little Mermaid grew up under the sea, the youngest daughter of a powerful mer-king, but she was always fascinated by tales of life above the water. When she was finally old enough to explore the upper world, she ended saving the life of a prince during a terrible storm and, unsurprisingly for a fifteen-year-old, became enamored of him. Determined to be with him, she negotiated with a sea witch for legs in exchange for her voice. But being human means having a soul, which mermaids don't. The Little Mermaid would only gain one if she married the prince and shared his soul with him.
Now be-legged and de-voiced, the Little Mermaid managed to meet the prince, who found her fascinating and takes her with him everywhere, like a pet. But he fell in love with another woman, a princess, and married her board a ship, with his silent companion in tow. The Little Mermaid was heartbroken, but though she had the chance to grow her tail back by killing the prince (thanks, Sea Witch), she did love him and couldn't bring herself to do it. She flung herself into the water to become seafoam instead.
Current Name: Andy Dodd
Age: 23
Occupation: Barista at Phoenix Effect
Personality: Andy's just never felt like he fit in anywhere. He's quiet and shy, with a dreamy sort of personality that read as weird and alien to other kids his age growing up. He struggles to make friends and often feels adrift and lonely. But Andy's also kind, and adaptive, and smart, and funny in a quirky, endearing way. He has a lot to offer to people willing to see below the surface.
Background: Andy's mother passed away when he was quite young, still in preschool, and it more or less upended his life from there. His father, a domineering sort of personality already, did not function well without his wife. Other than school, Andy was kept home most of the time with just his dad for company, and it affected his social skills. At school he was the shy, quiet weird kid, occasionally bullied but mostly just avoided.
Over the years it became clear that Andy's dad had some mental health issues (though he functions well enough to avoid treatment and has never been formally diagnosed). The family home has a low-moderate hoarding situation going on, and it was enough that Andy left home at eighteen, barely out of high school. He still visits his dad occasionally, but there's tension there.
He's bounced around jobs but has settled into slinging coffee at Phoenix Effect. He figures the forced interaction with people is good for him, even though small talk is still agonizing for him. He'll keep trying, though, because really, he just wants more out of life.
